Diane Thornton offers counselling for adults (16 years old and up) seeking encouragement and professional support for life stressors, transitions, and interpersonal challenges. Assistance is provided for those seeking a referral to a regulated health professional.

Consulting

Diane Thornton provides consultation services in collaboration with teachers, faith group leaders, social service providers, lawyers, mental health professionals, international adoption agencies, children’s aid workers, occupational therapists, adoption search and reunion support groups, parent training groups, and builders specializing in accessibility construction and design.

About Diane

Diane Thornton, M.T.S. in Ottawa

Diane Thornton has been in private practice since 1990. Her practice includes individual counselling for adults seeking professional support for life stressors, transitions and interpersonal challenges and referral assistance for those seeking a specialized mental health intervention from a regulated health treatment provider. An Ontario approved Private Adoption Practitioner for twenty-six years (1988 -2014) specializing in international adoption, she now provides adoption consulting information and pre and post adoption support.

Diane Thornton holds a Master of Theological Studies from Wilfrid Laurier University, 1985, and a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Guelph, 1978. She served as the Director of the Hamilton Conference Leadership Development Program for Youth, United Church of Canada, 1977, 1978, and 1980. From 1986 to 1988, she served on a clinical treatment team for an Ottawa Children’s Aid Society Residential Treatment program for children with autism and other developmental disabilities. From 1988 to 1990, she joined Family Builders, a therapeutic foster family provider, private adoption service and counselling agency where she provided individual (adult) and couple counselling, foster parent support and adoption training, specializing in special needs adoption.

She holds a General Classification membership in OACCPP, The Ontario Association of Consultants, Counsellors, Psychometrists and Psychotherapists, 2000-present. She is a former member of The Ontario Association for Behavioural Analysis, 2000-07, and a past executive member (2007-2014) of PAPEO, Private Adoption Practitioners of Eastern Ontario, 1987-2014.
